Are you an aspiring entrepreneur and feel so stretched for time? On top of house chores, kid duty, spouse time, and all the other things make your list seem too huge to manage. There has to be a way to simplify it, right? The answer to that is yes! I have found what works for me, and it might just work for you, too. Mompreneur, enlist the help of your little fam when you’re trying to build an online business from home.
Balancing home and online business life as a mompreneur
It’s so easy to get overwhelmed raising kids and growing an online business. The days easily bleed together, and before you know it, you’re cooking dinner late, again. The only thing you continuously ask for is balance, and maybe… just maybe, a little help from your kids and spouse.
Maybe you’ve ever so nicely asked politely for some help, and the kids disappeared into their room to hide out to avoid helping (my kids do that). Here’s the problem, sister. Stop asking! In order to grow a thriving online business, we mompreneurs need support! Rally those kiddos in and have a heartful discussion as a family.
1. Explain the overwhelm you’re feeling
- First things, first, friend. You need to be honest with how you’re feeling, patiently. Explain how stretched you feel, and the extra support would be amazing if your little family pitched in just a little.
- Keep the requests small. You would be surprised at just how having help getting one task off your plate feels lighter.
- Ask the family if they could help keep things tidy rather than leave a trail of where they’ve been.
2. Start your day earlier
- If you’re anything like me, you love your sleep. But if you’re serious about growing an online business, it’s a sacrifice you’re going to have to be willing to make.
- If your goal is to get up an hour before you normally would, start in half-hour increments.
- Start your day with coffee (or tea) and God. We want to set a good tone for the day. Spend some time soaking in God’s peaceful love and presence.
3. Delegate tasks to your kiddos
- Whether they end up being done right or not, assign tasks to your kids according to their age.
- For example, my youngest kid (11), is assigned to fold towels and put them away. My teen is in charge of putting dishes away.
- Do they have a game console? (I assume they do) The rule is they don’t play until chores are done. Getting them into this habit creates muscle memory for them. Soon they will automatically just do chores without you having to remind them.
4. Keep your online business task list to a daily minimum
- A really good way to feel overwhelmed is to overload your planner with a wild amount of tasks. Be realistic. You can’t fit a dozen tasks in a limited amount of time.
- Know the amount of time you have to work on online business tasks.
- If for example, you’ve set aside 4 hours, write 3-5 tasks for the specific timeframe, depending on the length of those tasks.
- Work on the tasks in chunks. Instead of dedicating those 4 hours to one task, work on the tasks in time blocks within those hours. That way you are making progress with all of the tasks you have.
5. Eliminate distractions
- For me, my phone is my biggest distraction. Put it out of sight, away from your work area. Stop scrolling.
- Keep any tab closed on your computer that isn’t business related. Write down any ideas that you think of to search or look into after you are done with your work time.
- Stick to your daily tasks. If you have a paper planner, and you can’t resist looking at it, remove it from your work area until you are done working.
6. Take breaks
- Remember self-care. You still need to move around and eat. Set a timer or alarm for every hour and get up and move around for 10-15 minutes.
- It’s easy to forget to eat. Eat meals. Don’t starve yourself. If you have to, choose a day and meal prep to make things easier.
- Eye strain is a real thing. If you start feeling like the light on your computer screen is too bright, turn the brightness down, or take a mini break away from the screen so your eyes can re-adjust.
The most simple but easy-to-forget things can make the shortest days easier. Whether it’s house chore day, or online business task day, having even a small amount of support and being able to hand off a couple of chores are better than trying to tackle all the things. As a mompreneur, I hope these tips help you enlist your family for support so you can focus on growing your online business. Let me know if these tips work for you below!
