How’s it goin’ sis!
Are you starting an online business and not totally sure what exactly is important for business growth? There are 2 specific assets that are critical to your business and why these things should be used from the beginning. I’m going to share what those 2 business assets are and why they matter. Read on to find out how to invest in your online business the right way!
Business assets that are critical for starting an online business
Relying on social media for any kind of business growth or growing an audience should be an addition of promotion, not completely the main focus of growing your online business. There are so many things that can happen when only using social media for business growth. One of the main reasons it should be considered an addition or an optional tool is that as soon as you post any kind of content to any platform, you automatically forfeit your rights to your own content.
Do you back up your content? As a business owner, regardless of where you are sharing your content, you should make a backup of it before posting it anywhere. If the platforms were to go down (again), there goes your content, and for who knows how long!
Do you have an audience established on your favorite platform? Well, you don’t even own the rights to your audience, either. How would you promote to your audience if all the platforms went down, or someone jacked your account? It’s not very likely you will end up getting access back if someone hacked your account. Or at the very least, get access back in time without too much damage being done to your account.
The 2 business assets for consistent business growth starting an online business
If you want total ownership over your content and audience, there are two business assets that are important to starting an online business. The ultimate goal when you’re starting an online business should be long-term, stable and consistent growth. I might just be a bubble burster, but social media does not guarantee overnight success. Here are the two top elements for your online business:
1. Your content
- If you can help it, start a blog or use your website and direct people to the content there. Since it’s on your website, you keep and own the rights to your own content.
- Long form content like blogging or content from your website is a much bigger asset because once you optimize your content with keywords and SEO, that content lives on the internet long-term. It won’t need to be recreated to get exposure and bring you traffic.
- Social media content is very short lived. It has a very short shelf life. This growth might be quick in the beginning, but will most likely become unsustainable and unrealistic to keep up with. Platform growth is not a smart long-term business strategy.
2. Start an email list
- As soon as you start promoting, build that email list! If you have any kind of content that is market ready, it’s traffic ready.
- You own your email list. If there was no other way to contact your audience, you have your email list!
- If you have content, you have valuable content to share with your list.
Over in my Facebook group, members asked, “How do I know if I’m giving too much away for free?” The answer is so simple, friend. When you’re starting an online business, you can never give too much away. You are establishing trust with your audience. Trust is the foundation for building your business. The point is to show up with valuable content that educates your audience, consistently.
Email list-building tips for starting an online business
If you’re wondering what to even send your email list or how to start one, here’s two ways to get your email list started.
1. Create a value-packed, juicy opt-in (freebie)
- By juicy, I don’t mean pretty. Your audience does not care about how pretty the freebie is. They just want a quick win that will move them to the next step in their business.
- If you’re struggling to create a freebie, I have a PDF that will walk you through creating something valuable for your audience. You can find that here.
2. Storytell
Relate and empathize with your audience. Tell a story that relates to the content you are sharing or the opt-in, or both! (The more links you can provide them with, the better) and link the content/opt-in that relates to the story.
3. Don’t forget the CTA
Lastly, what action do you want them to take? You can send them a bonus piece of content, a live training, a link to your group, etc. Don’t ever forget those CTAs!
Starting an online business the right way starts by investing time into the right platform and the right business assets that will help your business grow. Growing your email list is the secret to nurturing your audience on a more personal level.
Sharing your content that is optimized for keywords and SEO on the right platforms will allow that content to live for a long time. That eliminates the need to constantly recreate the same thing to prove to an algorithm that you’re constantly active.
